The Arkansas River, Leadville to Salida Fishing & River Map Guide" is designed to be the perfect companion for anyone engaged in recreation on the upper Arkansas River. On the upper reaches of the river, there is a great distinction to be made between the waters above and below the confluence with Lake Creek. This is partly a matter of topography: above this point, the river is largely an ox-bend prairie stream, while below it flows in the steep, confined channel of Granite Gorge and the many canyons that follow. But it is also differentiated by its hydrology: the flow in the Hayden Meadows reach above Lake Creek is almost entirely natural, with a short but intense spring runoff, while the river below this confluence is augmented by water releases from Twin Lakes and Turquoise reservoirs. Because of these impoundments, high flows are common below Lake Creek in general and throughout especially in summer.
Each Fishing & River Map Guide includes detailed river maps at a scale of 1 inch = 1/2 mile. At this scale, every bend in the river and rapid are clearly depicted and labeled. Each page is centered on the river and overlaps with adjacent pages, making it easy to find any spot along the river. The maps include rapids, river miles, access points, private and public lands, gauging stations, recreation sites, and more.
Greg Felt, a renowned fly fishing guide on the Arkansas River, wrote the introduction, along with descriptions of specific fly fishing strategies and seasonal fluctuations found on the river. You'll also find stream flow charts, hatch charts, and a chart of river access points.
More practical and easier Easier to use than folded maps, but just as compact and lightweight, National Geographic's Fishing & River Map Guide booklets are printed on waterproof, tear-resistant Backcountry Tough paper with stainless steel staples. A full UTM grid is printed on the map for easy GPS navigation.
