"Section 6 of the Lewis & Clark Bike Trail can be divided into two segments based on the Corps' multi-directional travel

Missoula, Montana, to Clarkston, Washington, is a continuation of Lewis and Clark's 1804 journeys westward

The Blackfoot option from Missoula, Montana, to Great Falls, Montana, follows the route that Captain Lewis used eastward in 1806

The two segments are described below

The main road follows the course of the Lochsa and Clearwater rivers; is fairly flat after crossing Lolo Pass

The 145.3-mile Lolo Trail closely follows the approximate route taken by the Corps of Discovery through the Bitterroot Mountains.

The rugged and mountainous terrain is mostly on narrow single lane gravel/dirt roads

Water is scarce

Once you arrive in Kamiah, there are two options to Clarkston

The 68-mile river option is more historically accurate, but there are concerns about U.S. Route 12 due to traffic volumes and its lack of concrete-barrier shoulders.
