The route follows the course of the Ruhr for 241 km, from its source in Winterberg, Sauerland, to its confluence with the Rhine at Duisburg, in the urban region of Ruhr. This route offers a striking contrast between peaceful countryside and vibrant industrial heritage.
The beginning of the route leads through lush meadows, timber-framed villages, and floodplain landscapes in the Sauerland. As you approach the Ruhr metropolis, the scenery changes with towpaths, technical monuments, castles, historic towns, and traces of the industrial past of a region that became a European Capital of Culture in 2010.
