Iceland, isTierra del Fuego and ice, exercises a magical charm on all nature lovers. Activity volcanoes and large lava deserts contrast with infinite number glaciers. Waterfalls and imposing geysers impress visitors as well as unique fauna and flora. This original landscape certainly guarantees unforgettable natural experiences, but also imposes on the hikers with particular challenges. There is no network of shelters and paths, as we know in the Alps, and time on the island is absolutely unpredictable.
The authors Christian and Gabriele Handl Take into account these particular conditions: thus, the routes described pass through the chosen, safe and very detailed paths and trails that lead you to the natural beauties of Iceland, accessible only to hikers. They offer short and impressive walks but also hikes of one or more days. Selected hiking destinations are mostly in national parks which, on the one hand, bring together the most fascinating natural landscapes, and, on the other hand, bring together the essential conditions for personal initiatives through their infrastructure and their ease of access at the edge of the coastal road.
In the introductory chapters as well as in the presentation of the regions, the authors prepare the hiker to the peculiarities of this country, the most north of Europe. Thanks to small maps with the layout of colored itineraries and clear altitude profiles, hikers are at the outset there. Hiking numbers, a different color depending on the difficulty, allow them to more easily choose their destination while the many photos, in color too, give them the opportunity to prepare for this Icelandic adventure at the simple reading of the present Guide.
